Frequency generates more argument than almost any training variable, and the trial data are unusually boring about it.
What the volume-equated studies show
When weekly volume per muscle is held constant, training that muscle once, twice or three times a week produces broadly comparable hypertrophy.
That result is often reported as “frequency does not matter”, which is the wrong conclusion. It means frequency is not itself a stimulus. It is the mechanism by which you deliver volume, and delivery constraints are real.
Where the constraint bites
One session: sets 1–8 productive, sets 9–20 under heavy fatigue
Two sessions of 10: both sessions performed relatively fresh
Nominal volume: identical. Effective volume: not close.
This is why higher frequency helps at higher volumes and is unnecessary at lower ones. The stimulus per set falls as fatigue accumulates within a session, and splitting the work resets that.
The practical prescription
Twice a week per muscle as a default. It suits the volume ranges most people use and it distributes the work sensibly.
Once a week is fine if your total volume per muscle is around ten sets. It becomes inefficient past that.
Three or more times starts to help when weekly volume is high, and brings a scheduling cost that most people will not sustain.
Choosing a split
Pick on the basis of how many days a week you will genuinely train — that is the variable that actually differs between people, and it is the one everybody lies to themselves about.
Four days a week supports an upper/lower structure hitting everything twice. Three days suits full-body. Five or six supports a split with higher per-muscle volume.
The split is downstream of the honest answer about your availability, and choosing it first is how programmes get abandoned.

How often should I train each muscle per week?
Twice a week is a sensible default for most people, and the reason is practical rather than physiological. When weekly volume is equated, the trial data show comparable hypertrophy across one, two and three sessions per muscle. Higher frequency becomes useful as weekly volume rises beyond what one session can productively absorb — which is a scheduling problem, not a stimulus one.
Is a full body or push pull legs split better?
Neither is inherently better once weekly volume per muscle is matched. Full-body suits lower total volumes and fewer weekly sessions; split routines suit higher volumes because they distribute the work into recoverable per-session doses. Pick on the basis of how many days a week you will genuinely train, which is the variable that actually differs between people.
Does training a muscle once a week work?
It can, and it is a worse fit for higher volumes. Twenty sets for a muscle in one session means the later sets are performed under substantial fatigue and contribute less; the same twenty split across two sessions are performed fresher. Once a week is fine at ten sets and inefficient at twenty.
