Exercise selection generates ranked lists, and the ranking criterion is usually the wrong one.
What activation studies actually measure
Surface EMG records electrical activity during a set. It is a real measurement of a real thing, and it predicts hypertrophy across exercises poorly.
Two reasons. It is sensitive to where in the range of motion peak load occurs, which varies by movement and does not map cleanly onto stimulus. And a single set’s activation is silent on the property that matters over months: whether you can keep adding load to the movement.
The three criteria that hold up
Loadability. Can you add weight to this for a year? A movement that plateaus at bodyweight delivers a decaying stimulus no matter how it scores on activation.
Stability. Can you approach failure without the limiting factor being balance or a smaller stabiliser? If a set ends because your torso gave out, the target muscle did not get the dose.
Consistency. Can you reproduce the execution session to session? An exercise whose form drifts makes your log unreadable, because the load comparison stops being like-for-like.
Exercise A: activation 10% higher, load plateaus after 3 months
Exercise B: activation 10% lower, load progresses for 12 months
B delivers far more total mechanical tension by month six, and the gap widens. Activation is a snapshot; loadability is the integral.
The practical prescription
Two exercises per muscle, chosen to load different positions — one where the muscle is lengthened under load, one where it is shortened. That covers the range without splitting volume so thinly that nothing progresses.
Three is the ceiling for most muscles. Past that you are distributing sets across movements too thinly to add weight to any of them, and progression is what you are actually buying.
The unglamorous conclusion
The best exercise for you is usually a boring compound you can load for a year, plus one isolation movement for the position the compound under-loads.
That is not a satisfying answer and it is why ranked lists remain popular.

The ones you can load progressively, perform consistently, and take close to failure without technical breakdown. That is a less satisfying answer than a ranked list, and it holds up better — because the property that drives adaptation is mechanical tension over time, and an exercise you can add weight to for months delivers more of it than one that scores well on an activation test.
